For Chromium Browser:

Go to Folder

home -> YOUR_HOME_NAME -> .cache -> chromium -> Default -> Cache

Inside cache Folder you can find it.

Note: '.cache' folder is hidden folder. so press 'ctrl+h' to make it visible.

For Firefox Browser:

Use 'DownloadHelper' Add on

or

Use 'Download Youtube Videos +'

Both can download Streaming Videos

Ubuntu Update Problem - Software Sources

I have got update Problem recently. No update get downloaded.

Solution:

Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources

under 'Ubuntu Software' Section click on 'Download from'

Then Choose Your Country and the click on 'Select Best Server'

Now it ll be started working fine. IF NOT again do the 'Select Best Server'. I got it working after 2 times

Undelete Plus - Recover deleted files.

1. Open Terminal, and install 'Photorec'

$ sudo apt-get install photorec

2. Run in Terminal,

$ sudo photorec

3. Choose the Hard Disk, Give 'Enter'

4. Choose, Intel

5. Using Left, Right Arrow Keys, Select, "File Opt" and give "Enter"

6. Press 's' to deselect all the files, and Select whichever file format you want using "Space bar".

7. Select your file system

8. Select, "Free"

9. Select the folder, you want to store. That's all :)

How to install Songbird 1.8.0

1. Go here, http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/SongBird-Download-18926.html

and download tar.gz (i686) for normal ubuntu and tar.gz (x86_64)

for 64bit Ubuntu.

2. Put the downloaded file in the Home folder, Right click on it, and choose, 'Extract Here'.

3. Now Rigth click on Applications and choose, 'Edit Menus'.

4. In that choose, 'Sound and Video' and click on 'New Item' (Right side). Now a window will open.

5. give

Name: Songbird

Command: /home/~~HomeFolder Name~~/Songbird/songbird

(Instead of 'HomeFolder Name' give your Home Folder Name)

6. Now click on the icon on the and choose 'HomeFolder -> Songbird -> songbird-512.png'. Now Click 'Ok'

7. That's all. Now you can run Songbird from, 'Applications -> Sound and Video -> Songbird'

10.10 Maverick - Audio, Video Stuttering, Hiccup VLC not Working

I had the Problem of:
' After upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10.
My Ubuntu OS seems to skip or stutter during playing music and movies skips briefly or replays a few ms that has already been heard'.

Except for the REAL Player All other players including VLC

Solution:

I posted in Ubuntu Forums. they gave me a solution, to Remove 'Pulseaudio'

I opened, System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manger
Searched for 'Pulseaudio' and I gave remove option. it asked for Removal of Many Other packages that depend on 'Pulseaudio'. I gave 'YES' option to remove all.

EFFECT: Desktop Volume applet will not be visible. To have Volume control Install, "Alsa Mixer", "Alsamixergui" from Ubuntu Software Center.

If you found NO SOUND in VLC, Tools -> Preferences -> Audio, Choose, Output Module as "Alsaoutput Module".

3. VLC Media Player:

Yes :-).. In VLC media player we can split and convert the movies. Press the Red button to start Recording and Press it again to stop recording.

To Convert, Media -> Convert/Save and ADD the video file you want. Then Press,

Convert/Save. Now a new Window will open. In that choose the file format and Press Start.

4. Avidemux:

It is also a video converter and Editor. Edit -> Preferences -> Automation in this, if u tick everything, Process will be automated.

5. Ogg convert:

It only converts to Ogg format. But without any errors or any other headache, it just converts almost all kind of video and audio files to open source format. Very user friendly software. I love this software :-)

1. Rhythmbox:

Default Player in Ubuntu.

Advantages:

1. Accepts the Multimedia Control Keys of Keyboard

2. It watches for changes in the 'media' Folder.

3. Sits in System Tray. Even If we closed it.

4. We cannot RATE the song without opening the Player Window.

5. Connected with last.fm

2. Songbird:

Songbird stoppped the linux support. Even though, their Linux Version is available. Click here to download it. (Download - tar.gz i686).

Advantages:

1. Very Attractive GUI.

2.Watch for the Chnages in the Media Folder.

3. More No of Songs can be viewed simultaneously.

4. We can change ZOOM.

Disadvantage: Don't Accept Multimedia Keys, Don't sit on System Tray.

3. Banshee:

It is available in Ubuntu Software Center. Looks very Simple and Easy to Handle.

Advantages:

1. Accepts the Multimedia Control Keys of Keyboard

2. Sits in System Tray. Even If we closed it.

3. When it is playing, without opening from system tray itself, We can RATE the song.

4. Conneected to last.fm

Disadvantage: It doesn't watch for changes in the 'media' Folder.

2. Diasable 'AdBlock' in Firefox

3. Then Open the real player Tools -> Preferences choose 'Connections' and then click 'Test Connection'

then 'Perform Test' then 'Update'.

4. Now Open the raaga.com and play any song. If it is not working try again and again. I got working after 3 tries. :-)

Freeciv, Freecol are some strategy based games in Ubuntu. But they can't even come near to AoE. Because their graphics is not good and not at all easy to play. A FREE AOE ~~like~~ Game 0AD on Aug 16 an alpha version is released by Wildfiregames for Linux.

To Install:
Open the Terminal and execute the following 3 lines one by one,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install 0ad

Features:

1. Playing Methods are very similar to AoE :-)

2. Software is under GNU-Public License.

3. Game Graphics are even better than AoE III. (See the Video)

4. Single Player and Multi Player both are available.

But it's an Alpha Version still needs to be improved.

1. Cutter, Editor, Merger:

Install, mp3 splt, mp3 wrap using,

$ sudo apt-get install mp3wrap mp3splt

a) To Split:

Put the mp3 files in home folder, and execute the following command in the terminal.

$ mp3splt filename.mp3 00.00 01.23 03.20

Now the file will splitted to two halves.

First Half, from 00:00 to 01:23 and

Second half, from 01:23 to 03:20

b) To merge or to join:

$ mp3wrap merged_filename.mp3 filename1.mp3 filename2.mp3

That is all :-)

2. Audio Extractor & Sound Converter:

Using this we can even extract the audio from a video file. :-)

a) Install, 'Sound Converter' from Ubuntu Software Center.

b) File -> Choose Add file or Add folder.

Kill process - Killing a Program - using kill command or System Monitor - End Process

1. When you are opening firefox, you may get an error message, "Firefox is already running" or "Firefox is already Open". Then you might restarted your system.

2. Sometimes some Programs like VLC or anyother program may refuse to run.

3. Sometimes a program may not respond, you want to kill that process.

One solution for all the above problems is to kill that process. There are many ways to do it.

Using Terminal:

Way1:

$ pkill process_name

e.g.,

$ pkill vlc

Way2:

$ pgrep process_name

This will return you the 'process_ID' then

$ kill process_ID

e.g., $ pgrep vlc

2715

$ kill 2715

Kill a Process in GUI:

Way1: Goto System -> Administration -> System Monitor

Choose, 'Processes'. Then Choose the process you want to end, and then click, 'End Process'

Caution: You may have to do it twice.

Way2: (for new users)

This is to KILL a process, which is not responding, Right click on Panel, choose "Add to Panel" then Add, "Force Quit". After adding force quit, Click once on Force Quit, then click on the application, this will kill that application.

How to install:

Dillo needs fltk2 package. Both dillo2.2 and fltk2 can be downloaded from, https://launchpad.net/~d.filoni/+archive/dillo/+packages for your ubuntu version. First install fltk2 .deb package then install dillo2.2 .deb package.

If you faced any dependency problems, please checkout for following packages. (Screenshot from, Synaptic Package manager, Dillo properties-> dependencies)

Tip: To make dillo further FASTER, diasble 'Use Remote CSS', 'Use Embedded CSS' & 'Load Images' in 'Tools'. If you want to see an image just click on it. Dillo will load it for you.

Midori - Light Weight Browser:

It is readily available in, 'Ubuntu Software Center'. It eats less system resource, Its GUI far better than dillo. It supports Video, HTTPS.

It is almost looking like a complete web browser.(except for add-ons). But i felt it is even slower than firefox. So those who have less RAM they can use 'Midori', instead of resource hungry firefox.

1) PDF to TEXT:

When we are reading an ebook, the fonts and its size might not be comfortable to our eyes. By using this 'gPDF Text ebook editor'. We can convert a pdf file to a text file then we can read with comfort.

Now open the terminal,

1. To convert, keep the pdf file in home folder,

       $ pdftotxt filename.pdf filename.txt

2. To convert first 2 pages to text,

       $ pdftotext -f 2 filename.pdf filename.txt

3. To convert last 2 pages as text,

       $ pdftotext -l 2 filename.pdf filename.txt

4. To convert a file which has password,

       $ pdftotext -upw 'password' filename.pdf filename.txt 

2) PDF to JPG:

It is nothing! Open the pdf file in, 'GIMP Image editor' and save the files as .jpg or .png or whatever file format you want.

Wireless "Device Not Ready" Problem

Open the terminal, and execute ANY ONE of the statement below.

$iwconfig

$ifconfig

Find the name of your wi-fi. (mine is, 'eth1' as shown in the above fig.)

Then execute,

$sudo ifconfig eth1 up

And then I disabled and enabled my wi-fi switch. It worked good.

Actually, I tried many methods given in Ubuntu Forums. For my dell laptop none is worked. Then I tried the above method. Surprisingly, it worked perfectly. Otherwise I would have re-installed again. :-)

Password Protected - Personal Diary - Lifeograph -Almanah

In ubuntu 9.10 - When I'm searching for a personal diary, It shows 'Almanah'. I tried to know how to protect it with a password. Then I used Open Office Word, as a password protected personal diary because i'm not able to find a way for almanah.

After I installed Ubuntu 10.04, I again searched for a personal diary. This time 'Lifeograph' appeared and it has been described as, 'Keep a private journal of your life'. It is easy to protect with a password and also easy to use. :-)

Important Note: (See below)

When you are saving the diary, save it as filename.diary. Because unlike other softwares, here extension is NOT automatically given by the software. So be careful. :-)

Split and Join the files in Ubuntu

When we download a big file, like a movie, that movie would have been uploaded as number of files. e.g., filename.flv.001, filename.flv.002 etc.,

To join these files in Ubuntu, there are two ways. One is the direct way. The other way is using 'lxsplit'.

Direct Way:

Keep your downloaded files in the 'home' directory. Then open the terminal and execute,

cat file.flv.001 file.flv.002 file.flv.003 > file.flv

That's all. :-)

Using lxsplit:

First install, 'lxsplit' from, 'Ubuntu Software Center'. Then,

To join - execute, lxsplit -j filename.flv.001

To split a big file - execute, lxsplit -s filename.flv 80M

Type in your OWN LANGUAGE - Type and Edit in Tamil

It is very easy in Ubuntu. No need to install any software.

1) Goto System -> Prefernces -> Keyboard

2) Choose, 'Layout' and then, click 'Add'. Suddenly a window will open, Choose 'By Language'

3) Now choose 'YOUR' language, then click 'ADD'. Now in 'Layouts' click, 'Options'. Choose 'Key(s) to change Layout', it shows, what are all keys can be used as language toggle-rs.

e.g., I've chosen, 'Capslock' as my language toggle-r. If I press 'Capslock' keyboard changes to 'Tamil', if i press it again, it get back to 'English'.

4) While choosing your language, a keyboard layout appears as shown in the 1st figure. It tells you, which key is allocated for which letter.

5) Since the language is selected by the OS, all applications support this. I even named my folders in my mother tongue(Tamil). :-)

6) Choose 'Lohit _______' font in 'Word'. If you need more fonts, you can install it from, 'Ubuntu Software Center'.

Caution: When Ubuntu is asking password, be sure that the keyboard is in 'English mode' not in your mother tongue.

Don't worry keyboard language status will always be displayed in the task-bar.

Engineering Softwares

MATLAB Alternatives:

1. GNU Octave:

It can support '.m' extension. i.e., If you write a code in Matlab, no need to write a new code. You can use the same matlab file without any modification! GNU Octave is more matured than FreeMAT.

Except for, more advanced features, it works very fine. Apparently most of us not going to use very advanced functions in Matlab. But it is a bit slow, just a bit slower than Matlab. This is the only disadvantage, I found. More over It occupies a very less space in your hard drive.

2. FreeMAT

It looks very similar to Matlab. It can also execute the '.m' extension file. No need to do any modification in a matlab file. It doesnot support 'Control System' functions but Octave does.

It takes 1minute to execute a file (An example file with 1600x1600 matrix), while Matlab takes 20 seconds and Octave takes 50 seconds to execute the same file.

Moreover it does not plot, 3D plots but Octave does.

SIMULINK Alternative:

Scilab:

(Open Scilab -> Applications -> Xcos) It contains all the basic blocks similar to simulink. But it doesnot have very advanced blocks. But for students like us do not need very advanced blocks. These basic blocks are more than enough.

Scilab can also be used as an alternative for matlab. But you have to make some minor changes in your Matlab file. Otherwise you can use Matlab to Scilab converter which is available in Scilab itself.

Orcad Alternatives:

(PCB design softwares)

1. KiCAD, 2.gEDA 3.Eagle

Among them, Eagle is easy to use for a new designer. But it had a board dimension limitation. KiCAD is more matured software. It has a 3D viewing option too.

gEDA is very similar to EDA.

Other than these, many circuit simulation softwares and many purpose-oriented small softwares are available in Ubuntu.

1. Celestia:

There are many astronomy softwares in Ubuntu. The reason why I'm suggesting is, 'In this software, We needn't do anything. Everything is already animated'. :-) It is very useful for School Students. It is very easy to use.There are two ways to use it.

Way1: Just Open the 'Celestia' software and Choose 'Help -> Run Demo'. That is all. They will take you to the entire Universe by traveling from Earth, Moon, Sun, Saturn.. and Other Stars then finally they shows the 'Milky Way'

Way2: In this we can view the celestial object whatever we want.

Choose, 'Navigation -> Search for Object' a window will open. In that type whatever you want. e.g., 'Saturn'

Then choose, 'Navigation -> Centre Selection', and then,

'Navigation -> Goto Selection'.

Now you cannot observe the revolution of the planet. Press, 'L' many times to increase 'Time Speed'. Now you can view the rotation of the planet. Press 'K' to decrease the 'Time Speed'.

2. Periodic Table:

It is a well-designed, nice software. It is very User-friendly.

Just click on whatever the element you want. It shows Atomic No, Atomic mass and All the Physical and Chemical Properties of the subsatnce.

3. Genius Math Tool:

When we are solving complicated equations in math or science. It is very difficult to solve even in a 'Scientific Calculator' This software enables us to solve easily. e.g., If you give the following commands one by one, it gives the answer as 11.

a=5;

b=6;

c=a+b

The other way is, Click 'New' a window will open, type the above 3 lines and Click 'Run' answer will displayed. It is programming way of solving.

Software Sources Regeneration

When we are installing new softwares in Ubuntu, sometimes we need to add the 'Other Sources' in 'Software Sources'. This will add up and finally the updating process will take a long time.

Moreover sometimes when we are updating it will show some errors.

Sometimes even we do some changes in 'sources.list' file.

Solution:

Goto http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/ and choose your Country, Ubuntu Version and choose the sources and updates you needed.

Now 3windows will appear.

Way 1:

1. Choose "System -> Administration -> Software Sources" and the choose 'Other Software'. Click 'ADD' and copy all the lines starting from 'deb' one by one.

2. Open the 'Terminal' and execute the lines one by one from the 2nd window.

Way 2:

1. Open the 'Terminal' and execute,

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

It opens the 'sources.list' file. Delete all the contents in that file. Copy the contents in the '1st window' and paste it in the 'sources.list'. Then save it and close it.

2.Then in 'Terminal', execute the lines one by one from the 2nd window.

Still if you face any errors in the updating process. Try this. Change the 'Downloading From' to 'Main Server' in the software sources.

It'll not stop by just showing the colours. By mistake if you are trying to visit a suspicious site, it'll show you a warning message as shown below.

Some more firefox add-ons:

1.AdBlock Plus - To get eascaped from Ads

2.Read it later - It ll save you the web pages. you can read it later (even in offline)

3. DownThem All - for Accelerated Download.

Some other Add-ons also there in firefox, like Web2pdf converter, Youtube downloader etc., You search and install them based on your needs.

Actually Ubuntu users needn't worry about the 'virus' sites. Because 99.99% of them are especially for windows. :-)

Mobile Phone Softwares in Ubuntu

Using the 1st software - You can, Backup your Contacts, Messages, Call Details, Todos etc., In future you can import back to your mobile. Even You can Transfer contacts, messages etc., from One Mobile phone to Other Mobile Phone.

The 2nd Software is Soley to Send SMS from Computer Through Mobile.

1. Wammu

You can install this from 'Ubuntu Software Centre'. It is a general mobile software, here we'll see how to connect the mobile and how to use it. First test your mobile connectivity via bluetooth to your computer. After testing this disconnect the mobile from your system but keep switch ON the bluetooth (You can even use data cable also). Now open 'Wammu',

1. 'Wammu -> Phone Wizard' choose 'Automatically Search for a Phone', if it failed try, 'Guided Configuration'.

2. After successfully detected by the 'Wammu' software, choose 'Phone -> Connect' . Now your mobile would have been connected. Now in 'Retrieve', you can retrieve and see your contacts, messages, todos etc from your mobile.

The biggest advantage what I felt is, Using 'Backup -> Save' menu, We can backup our whole mobile content. In future, if we need 'Backup -> Import' will give back the data. I think, using this method, we can even transfer the whole data from one mobile to another mobile.

2. Phone Manager

This is also available in 'Ubuntu Software Centre'. It is a very simple yet very useful application. Configure the bluetooth connectivity once with the computer, then keep both the device 'bluetooth's just switched ON. Now open this application.

It'll automatically get connected. Instead fighting with small mobile keypad, we can use the keyboard. But this application has to be enhanced, such that contacts can also be viewed.

Gtalk in Ubuntu - voice chat

--> When I was using 9.10, I tried Gtalk with 'Google Talk' prism. It told, you can do voice chat only in windows not in linux.

--> Empathy and Pidgin also not working. After some period 'gtalX' was arrived. They claimed that, you can do only the voice chat not the video chat. But when I entered my username and password. It is still connecting............ :-).

--> Finally 'Skype' worked perfectly!! without any dependency problem.

--> In 10.04 lucid, I tried voice chat again with my google account. Surprisingly it worked!!!!

To get this, Open 'Applications -> Internet -> Empathy IM client' then 'Edit -> Accounts -> Add' choose "protocol: Google Talk"

Give your user name and password and don't forget to tick the 'Enabled'. That is all. But based on quality of voice chat, I prefer Skype.

If Empathy is not working, check for following packages in Synaptic Package Manager.

Tamil Dictionary in Ubuntu

Steps:

1. Install "Golden Dict" from "Ubuntu Software Centre".

2. Open "Golden Dict" then choose "Edit -> Dictionaries" then choose "Wikipedia".

3. Except "English Wikipedia and Wiktionary" remove other language links (if u don't want).

4.Now click ADD, give NAME as "Tamil Wiktionary" and give ADDRESS as "http://ta.wiktionary.org/w" then select(click) ENABLED.

5.Then again click ADD, give NAME as "Tamil Wikipedia" and give ADDRESS as "http://ta.wikipedia.org/w" then select(click) ENABLED.

6. now click OK.

Four W's seen in the figure are meant for Tamil/English - Dictionary/Encyclopedia. We can enable or disable the appropriate W as per our need.

Obviously, it works in on-line only. It is faster than opening a browser and search. If you have expected an off-line dictionary, click here to download a pdf file. It contains the Tamil equivalents for English words.

Winamp Media Player in Uubuntu..

Actually there is no linux-winamp version till now(as far as i know). But there is a media player that looks like winamp. It is "Audacious" and it is available in "Ubuntu Software Centre". Its 'Playlist Editor' and 'Equalizer' are looking very similar to winamp but it doesn't have a 'Media Library'(ML).

->Winamp Skins are accepted by Audacious.

Mainly, I like winamp for its Media Library (ML) option. Rhythmbox and Banshee have ML option.
Moreover when we are playing winamp in windows, it will not respond for multimedia keys such as play/pause, next etc., but Rhythmbox and banshee are responding. :-)

Birthday Reminder/Notifier in Ubuntu

As far as i know, there is no straight Birthday Reminder in Ubuntu. But there is actually a way to have birthday reminder.

In "Ubuntu Software Centre" search for "Gbirthday" and install it. But you CAN'T add any birthdays to "GBirthday"

Open "Applications -> Office -> Evolution mail and Calender"

Click "New -> AddressBook" and choose type as "On this Computer".

Now again click "New -> Contact" add the contact details and birthdays. If you add "GBirthday" to "Startup Applications", it blinks nicely on the taskbar for birthdays :-)

if anybody knew a straight forward Birthday Reminder pls inform me.

I searched for a dictionary in 'Ubuntu Software Center' and installed it. When I was looking for a word, I came to knew that, it works only in On-line. Then I installed all the dictionaries in 'Ubuntu Software Center'. All are On-line dictionaries. None is Off-line. I got frustrated.Then I got an idea!! I searched 'Thesaurus'. A new one came I installed it without any expectation. Surprisingly, It works Off-line.

Connect Mobile Internet or Pocket Internet in China Mobiles with Computer using Ubuntu

Actually any Mobile doesn't need PCsuite for connecting Internet in Ubuntu. This advantage is utilized for China mobiles. :-)

Step1: Configure your mobile internet connection with any nokia or sony ericson or any mobile which is configurable.

(You need to have Ubuntu 10.04 Operating System)

Step2: After your SIM get configured for internet connection, put it in your China mobile and connect it via data cable Now choose "COMport" option.

Step3: Open(in Ubuntu) System->Preferences->Network Connections

Click on "Mobile Broadband" and then click ADD button

a) It ll show your mobile name right or wrong never mind, click "FORWARD"

b) Choose the country as "India"

c) Choose your Service Provider Aircel or Airtel or Vodafone...

d) Choose your plan e.g., If you are using AIRCEL choose Prepaid

Configuration Finished

Step4: A window will open now, Just TICK "Connect Automatically" button.

Close everything. Now you will get the INTERNET :-)

Note: The above procedure has been tested with Sigmatel S90 with Aircel and TataDOCOMO
